A photographer captured an amazing timelapse of a September 8-9 Southern Lights display visible from Tasmania and across the ocean in New Zealand.

A pair of massive solar flares earlier in the week, as reported by NASA, triggered magnetic storms that resulted in brilliant auroras across the globe. National Geographic reported they were X-class flares, the most powerful category for a solar flare, and were capable of disrupting GPS signals and electric grids.

They were visible from Tasmania, the apple-shaped island that sits across a narrow sea from the Australia mainland. Jase Batey, from the Tinderbox region, captured this footage over nine hours. Credit: Jase Batey via Storyful
